Our Common Vocation

"God wants you to become holy like him in this life, and glorious like him in the next.
It is certain that growth in the holiness of God is your vocation.
All your thoughts, words, actions, everything you suffer or undertake, must lead you towards that end.
Otherwise, you are resisting God, in not doing the work for which he created you and for which he is even now keeping you in being."
— St. Louis de Montfort, Secret of Mary.

All of us share the same goal and purpose: union with God. We all must continually strive toward holiness and sanctification so we can reach the end for which we were created: eternal happiness with our Creator.

We all have this common vocation of growing in holiness. Our state in life is a means to this end. Our earthly vocation is meant to sanctify us.

God knows us better than we know ourselves: He alone knows best what we need in order to be holy. Only God is holy, and only God can make us holy. We will only achieve our purpose by following His plan for us; not by making up our own according to what seems best to us. What is best for us is what God has in mind for us.

There are many vocations and various methods of devotional exercises — but the best one for us personally is the one that sanctifies us. When something is in accord with His divine wisdom and goodness, we must conclude that it is best thing that could happen to us and accept it with joy. We must be aware when a particular devotion, exercise, book, etc., takes away the peace of our soul. Even if it is a good thing, it may not be good for us personally — it may be an obstacle to grace and not the means ordained by God for our sanctification. Leave them aside and embrace the duties of the present moment. Indeed, nothing can be more effectual for our sanctification than the path of simple surrender to God’s will.
